Fit Tip: How to Detox from the Inside Out

FRESH-FOODAbout once every two months or so, I start to feel like I need to reboot my body. After I’ve splurged on movie theatre popcorn, my girls night junk food binges, and any other possible chemicals that I’ve put into my body are just screaming to be let out. When this cry for help happens, I’ve come to realize that giving my body a nice and easy cleanse is the perfect remedy. And lucky for us, there are several easy and effective ways to give your body the TLC it’s craving in this time of need.

With summer nearing, it is now a great time to detox from the inside out. Not only will you feel confident in your bathing suit, but it will also make you feel happier too! Here are five remedies that I promise will help leave you feeling refreshed, restored, and cleansed:

1. Eat right and eliminate the bad stuff.
Try a raw food cleanse – this means spending a few days eating only fresh fruits and vegetables and nuts, it’s a great way to jump start the cleansing process. While some people may think this sounds a little extreme, it is insanely beneficial to your health! Our bodies ingest many hormones, chemicals, and unnecessary fats in our daily diet that includes meat, dairy, and processed foods. According to Livestrong, eating organic, unprocessed, raw foods for a few days allows your body to eliminate toxins and other unhealthy foods from your body. This also gives your system more fibre and nutrients which is a complete double bonus! To start, try whipping up a green smoothie, and make sure you are drinking tons of water if you’re going down the raw food route. If doing the complete raw food diet is too much for some of you, creating your own cleanse by eliminating alcohol, caffeine, and animal products is also very productive for your body.

2. Switch up your workout.
If you’re feeling bored or uninspired by your workout routine, try to change things up a bit. Instead of taking your morning run on the treadmill take it to the great outdoors and breathe in some of that wonderful fresh air. Swap out your weekly circuit training for a zumba class. And above all, try a yoga class, at least twice a week if you can. Getting your body into twisting positions naturally detoxes your internal organs and helps with digestion and elimination of toxins – according to Refinery 29.

3. Get more sleep.
This is probably the one I struggle with the most, I’m usually a complete night owl. Whether it’s during the school year with trying to finish papers or summertime when you just don’t want to sleep away the good weather! No matter the case, on the occasions when I have spent quiet weekends catching up on sleep, I’ve noticed what a huge difference it makes in all aspects of my life. The Huffington Post claims that getting enough sleep naturally restores and refreshes your body, lowers your blood inflammation proteins, increases creativity, and reduces stress. Consider this: If you are trying out new diets or workouts like I’ve recommended above, your muscles won’t be able to build back up after exercising, and your digestion system will have a hard time working properly without enough sleep.

4. Brush it off.
If you’ve never heard of dry brushing, you’re missing out on a great detoxifying secret. Since your skin is the biggest organ in your entire body, it holds a lot of toxins…until you release them, of course. Sweating is one way to release these toxins, and dry brushing is another. When your skin is dry, preferably before you shower or bathe, use a salt scrub, sugar scrub, or a body brush and give your entire body a good rub. Then rinse all those dead skin cells and impurities off after scrubbing. Studies show that this helps boost circulation on your skin and also aids your lymphatic system in removing even more toxins from the rest of your body.

5. Treat yourself to a massage.
Not only does a deep tissue massage feel amazing, but it also releases toxins from your muscles and therapeutically cleanses your body of stress and impurities. In fact, a massage is actually considered to be a form of medicine, according to the Mayo Clinic. But, if you don’t have the budget for a spa treatment, get your boyfriend or bestie to give you a back rub and return the favour for them too. Just be sure to drink lots of water afterwards to speed up that detox process.

These five tips will not only help cleanse your body physically, but you should also notice mental clarity and a little peace of mind. To bring the process full circle, I like to give myself a bit of a mental detox as well. Making a long-term list when I start any kind of get-healthy plan helps so that I can be sure that I’m sticking to the lifestyle that I want. Writing out my goals, even if it is as simple as “book a massage,” and putting that list somewhere I see it everyday, like my bathroom mirror, and taking a peek when I feel like I’m getting off track.
